# Source snapshot — birth-rates story

Retrieved **10 October 2026** by [`fetch.mjs`](fetch.mjs) (from the download folder: `npm ci && node birth-rates-src/fetch.mjs`). These are small extracts, not a DataPressr dataset: no `datapackage.json`, no `build.ts`. [`calculate.mjs`](calculate.mjs) checks the extracts' hashes and writes every number quoted in the post to `statistics.json`; `../birth-rates-make-charts.mjs` builds the desktop and `-mobile.svg` charts from the same rows.

**Edition check (7 November 2026).** WPP 2024 is still the current edition, so the data was not refreshed; the observation cutoff is **2023** (the last estimate year; 2024 onwards are projections). The UN's *World Population Prospects 2024 (revision 1): Interim update* (release note dated 19 January 2026, <https://population.un.org/wpp/assets/Files/WPP2024_Release-Note-rev1.pdf>) postpones the next revision to 11 July 2027 and revises only Togo's population and vital-event counts (fertility rates and all aggregates unchanged). The original WPP 2024 file is still served with the same hash. Reducing Togo's population by its 12% revision changes the post's population shares by less than 0.011 percentage points under this illustrative 12% reduction (2023: 67.3% below 2.1; 49.4% outside China and India), so no published figure changes. (Checked by `check-prose.mjs` in the release folder.)
