# Postal Codes Dataset for South Africa (ZA)

This dataset contains South African postal codes -- 3,920 rows, 3,266 distinct codes, all 9 provinces and all 52 district/metro municipalities. Built from GeoNames' postal export, enriched with province and municipality data joined in from GeoNames' own general gazetteer.

## Data Sources

Place names, postal codes and coordinates are sourced from **GeoNames**. Province and district/metro-municipality names are recovered by joining the postal data to GeoNames' own general gazetteer by place name and coordinate proximity (the postal export alone carries no admin fields) -- see `ATTRIBUTION.txt` for the join method and its measured accuracy. Both are licensed **CC BY 4.0**.

**Licensing status.** Cleared to sell -- `licence_status.decision: compatible`. See `ATTRIBUTION.txt` for the full attribution notice.

**Coverage note.** Admin assignment is a coordinate-based join against a gazetteer, not an official South African administrative register -- high confidence (median distance ~1.2 km) but not authoritative in the way a government register would be. Disclosed, not presented as official.

## Usage

The dataset files are available in CSV format and can be accessed and downloaded using the links provided in the `datapackage.yml`.
